Students studying exercise and sport science at Carthage have many opportunities to enrich their education. Special programs and opportunities include:
Field Placements and Internships
Field placements, internships, and clinical rotations offer students valuable experience in a real work environment.
All students who pursue physical education teaching licenses must complete field placements and student teaching. Students will get placed by the Education Department for student teaching and will teach two levels of physical education (i.e. elementary school and high school) during one semester. Most students are placed in Kenosha or Racine schools, but students may elect to find their own placement within a one-hour drive from Carthage. Field placements occur prior to student teaching and range from 10-25 hours.
EXSS majors who are not pursuing physical education complete a 120-hour internship during their senior year. Students work as interns for area businesses and organizations, usually during J-Term or summer break. Past internships include:
- Northwestern University
- Marquette University
- Prairie High School
- Grind Season
- Athlete’s Edge Vision Training
- Atlas Physical Therapy
- Get Fast, Inc.
- Kenosha YMCA
- Racine Athletic Club
- Boys and Girls Club
- Athletico Grayslake
- Gold’s Gym Racine
- Camp SkyLemar
- Bo Jackson’s Elite Sports Dome
Students pursuing athletic training complete clinical rotations that provide them with an opportunity to synthesize their skills and knowledge in a decision-making environment showing skill mastery through the integration of clinical proficiencies.
