The Teaching Commons provides a coordinated set of activities informed by the interests of the individual faculty member and of the larger community.
The Commons provides a space in which faculty share ideas and expertise, reflect upon our vocation as teacher-scholars, and deepen our collective understanding of the intellectual growth of both student and teacher. The Commons strives to support faculty throughout their careers, recognizing that the needs and interests of individual teacher-scholars change over time.
Carthage Learning Communities
Learning communities provide a structured, supportive environment in which faculty learn with and from colleagues interested in the same topics or issues. Learning communities are supported with a budget for materials, community-building activities, and other resources.
Conversations about Teaching and Learning
Conversations about Teaching and Learning provide a time and space for informal, collegial conversations about a variety of topics related to teaching and to student learning and development.
Topics of conversations reflect the current scholarship and dialogue in higher education as well as those of particular interest to a member of the faculty and relevant to our community of practice at Carthage. All members of the College community are welcome to attend. Suggested topics for Conversations are welcomed at email@example.com
Teaching Practice Sessions
Featuring guest presenters and facilitators, teaching practice sessions are workshops for faculty on topics such as:
- Ethics and the Undergraduate Researcher
- How Implementing Transparency in Your Classroom Can Facilitate Success for Less-prepared Students
- What You Should Know and Do to Make Your Classroom Welcoming and Inclusive
Opportunities for faculty and staff members to read and discuss books on topics related to teaching and learning are important to the life of a community of practice.
The Teaching Commons supports the formation of book discussion groups by recommending specific books, or by supporting groups formed by faculty or staff. Funding is available to cover the cost of books for group members.

Those interested in forming a book discussion group can request support by sending the following information to firstname.lastname@example.org:
- Title of book
- Estimated cost per book
- Names of five colleagues interested in becoming members of your group
- Projected start date for discussions
Teaching and Learning Conference
The Fall Teaching & Learning Conference is held every August. This annual event features a bit of technology and pedagogy for everyone, including teaching and learning training sessions, a strolling lunch with technology tables, and hands-on break-out sessions.
