In our first Family Fun Night of the year, Carthage’s Court of Nobility will be joining us with the majesty himself, King Arthur. You’ll be welcomed into the kingdom for a night of medieval activities including forging a shield to fight alongside King Arthur, creating your very own dragon, competing in musical chairs, and so much more!

Have you ever wondered how matter can take so many forms? Or how water can be a solid, liquid, and a gas? So have we! To answer some of our questions, Carthage’s Chemistry Club will be joining us for a night full of experiments that will give us a closer look into the stages of matter. You’ll even be able to find your inner chemist and try some experiments of your own!

Families are invited to join the Carthage Court of Nobility student organization for Family Fun Night in Hedberg Library on Friday, Sept. 30. Enjoy taking a step back in time to discover what it was like to sit at the round table with King Arthur, Merlin, and the ever-pesky Sheriff.

Martin Luther King, Jr. made America a better place for all people when he and his followers embraced nonviolence and used peaceful demonstration as a way to make positive change. We’ll celebrate MLK Day by learning about this great man, learning Civil Rights and slave songs with local musician Brent Mitchell, creating decorations for our Peace Tree, and other interactive activities.

Discover some of the wild animals that live right here in Wisconsin. During this program, we will get up close and personal with all sorts of animals from Wisconsin. We’ll learn why all living things need water and about Great Lakes conservation. Find out how we can protect our own Lake Michigan as well as the animals and their habitats that call Wisconsin home. Note: the animal presentation ends at 7:00pm and will be followed by crafts.

Our Business students always have something fun planned for us! Tonight they’ve got two fun projects! Piggy Bank will teach the importance of saving money, the difference between needs and wants, and how to save money. Then we’ll learn about Good Lemons, Bad Lemons. With the help of a Fairly Odd Parents episode, coloring pages, and games, children could make business ethics applicable to their lives.

A Night with David Diaz

Caldecott-winning illustrator David Diaz comes to Carthage for a special night of art instruction! David knew he wanted to be an illustrator when he was six. He’ll help us create works of art and explore our inner artist. David has illustrated numerous award winning books for children, including Smoky Night by Eve Bunting, for which he was awarded the Caldecott Medal; The Wander by Sharon Creech, which received a Newbery Honor; and Diego: Bigger Than Life by Carmen T. Bernier-Grand, a Pura Belpre Honor Award winner.

Come explore art at this hands-on event with Amy Cordova, two time winner of ALA’s Pura Belpre Honors Award, a Wisconsin Library Association Illustrators Award, and recent America’s Award. Amy Cordova is an artist, author, educator, and award winning illustrator of children’s books. Cordova’s work is saturated with vibrant color and speaks of connection, the spirit, and a sense of place within a cultural context. Lego Adventure

Lego artists Dave and John Xandegar have displayed their Lego creations nation-wide. Tonight they bring their skills and creativity with everyone’s favorite building bricks to Family Fun Night. Join us for fun on the floor as we build, explore, and create.

This was our second summer participating in Kenosha’s Peanut Butter & Jam Concert Series. The concerts were held every Thursday in July and August. People could come listen to great music, bring or buy a yummy lunch, and participate in an amazing craft with a Family Fun Night Staff Member. Family Fun Night also participated in the “Noontime” Concert Series from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in Veteran’s Memorial Park, and two Saturday night Concert Series from 6-8 p.m.

Fun Fair

Ever wanted to learn how to juggle? Feel called by fencing or dance? Or maybe you want to express yourself through collage. Come to our Fun Fair and learn a new skill to show off on the playground, at the water cooler or your next family event. Carthage clubs host 30 minute mini-workshops on a variety of fun activities for us. Participants can arrive at any time and drop into a workshop. Each club will host three 30 minute workshops, so you can learn up to three skills in one night! (Please note: tonight’s format geared toward mid-elementary to high school, but there will be something for everyone!)

“Plank Road Summer” Southeast Wisconsin and the Underground Railroad

Wisconsin authors (and sisters) Emily and Hilda Demuth discuss their book “Plank Road Summer,” a story of 13-year-old friends experiencing southeast Wisconsin’s Underground Railroad history. The sisters discuss the history around the book and lead us through fun, hands-on activities including building a plank road and carding wool. Learn about this forgotten piece of Wisconsin history and how the sisters wrote and published their book. There will be two programs this evening: one for preschool/early elementary and one for middle school-up. Books available for purchase for signing.

Dance-Stravaganza!

The Carthage Dance Department is hosting a night of dance for all ages! Take a free lesson, enjoy a student performance, and cut a rug in the Niemann Theatre.We will be exploring African/Modern fusion through the work of Pearl Primus, Latin styles (Merengue and Mexican Folklore), and we will be leading a session on reading and creating dances from a very basic form of dance notation called Motif Writing. No experience necessary, but a willingness to have fun is!

The Magic School Bus Blasts Into Space

We’ve been working with our Microgravity Team, who recently visited NASA in Houston! We’ll blast into outer space with the Magic School Bus. Ms. Frizzle, Liz and your other favorites will be there to help you complete astronaut training and find a missing space crew! Learn how rockets work and design your own. Then blast off to other planets after you learn how astronauts plan their space route. Who knows, you might meet an alien or two on your journey. After you complete training, you’ll journey to the stars to help find the missing crew.
