Top 10 Scenes You’ll See Your First Year at Carthage
By Maren Schutz ’15
Welcome to Carthage, Class of 2019! Carthage is a beautiful campus, packed with things to do and see. We don’t want you to miss out on any of it during your first year here, so we made a list of the Top 10 things you should see and do here.
1. Lake Michigan
It’s hard to miss the lake when you arrive on campus. As a Carthage student, you will get to enjoy it every day while you walk to class, find a study spot on a nearby rock, or have an amazing view from your dorm room. If you look closely, you’ll notice that the color changes every day!
2. Your entire class during New Student Convocation
New Student Convocation is the only time you’ll be with your entire class in one room until you graduate from Carthage. All the warm welcome speeches might make it start to sink in that you’re really at college. Look around you and remember this special moment. The people around you will be your classmates, best friends, and maybe even your spouse someday!
3. A Carthage Parade
Homecoming Weekend is packed full of fun activities for current students and alumni alike, including a parade down campus drive. The parade features students and alumni from Carthage’s sororities, fraternities, clubs, as well as a few non-Carthage groups. You’ll also see the Homecoming Court, President and Mrs. Woodward, Abraham Lincoln, and Torchie, our mascot.
4. A Night at the Theater
The Carthage Theatre Department showcases its talent during the entire academic year. Productions feature faculty directors, student directors, and world premiers, in addition to the high caliber of talent of the theatre students. As a Carthage student, you receive two free tickets to all of the main-stage shows.
5. Christmas Fest
Ask any student involved in a musical ensemble, or anyone who has been to our annual Christmas Festival, about how spiritually invigorating this annual event is. This event is always held in the first weekend of December, and draws thousands of people to Carthage to share in a night of music and scripture. It’s impossible to not get chills while singing “Silent Night” by candlelight.
There’s something magical about the first snowfall of the year. Whether you prefer to watch the snow from your window while you study, or go outside with your friends and build snowmen and have snowball fights, take some time to enjoy the beauty of winter at Carthage.
7. Places you’ve never been before
From New York to Africa to Japan to Europe, Carthage offers travel opportunities all over the country and the world—for college credit! J-Term is the perfect opportunity to learn about and experience new cultures and have experiences you would never find in a classroom.
8. Celebration of Scholars
Every spring, student and faculty scholars from all the divisions have the opportunity to present their research in the Celebration of Scholars. Students’ work includes senior theses, work from SURE projects, and scholarly and creative works.
9. Casino Night
Spring Family Weekend features an event called Casino Night, where students can bring their families to the TARC and play casino games. There are raffles where you can win cool prizes ranging from an iPad to food.
10. Breakfast … at midnight?!
To help alleviate some of the stress of finals, Carthage Dining Services offers a free Late Night Breakfast to its students at the end of each semester. Enjoy pancakes, scrambled eggs, and sausage, served up by your professors and Carthage staff.
