BIO/GEO 675: Biology and Geography of Nicaragua
January 16, 2020
Before I begin I just want to explain that this trip is split up into two groups. There is group A and group B…group A went to their work day while the other got to go on an excursion. I am in group B therefore I got explore the island today. Our day started around 7 am and included some oatmeal and bananas. After an hour or so we started to sort medications and donations for the work day group. Along with the many medical supplies were clothes. These donations would go to the locals. This process took about an hour and was put together very well.
I have to say I love this group of people because we can be loud when we want to be and completely professional when we need to be. Around 10 am we left to our destination which was Chacan Verde. This place wasn’t as beautiful as the many islands but it definitely was unique. There were vibrant flowers that had a perfume like scent and plants that were different shades of green.
While admiring the vegetation we learned about the history behind Chacan verde. People believe that there is an underground world where Chacan verde stands. Supposedly there is a man or “el Diablo” that will kidnap people, take them to the underground world and turn them into pigs or cows. Due to this legend you won’t see many locals wondering around alone on the grounds.
On a happier note we got to see a lot of butterflies and the blue ones in particular were the prettiest. Not to be corny or anything but this trip is kind of like a butterfly, it takes a while to come out of that cocoon but once you do you will fly. Another great day here in Nica and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
