Welcome to day 365 of Covid lockdown. That’s right: 365 days. March marks the one year anniversary since Covid-19 put out normal life at Carthage. My goodness, it has been a tough year.
It feels like both a lifetime away and just yesterday since life was normal. Spring break was happening (remember those?), the semester was still young, and most had returned from an unforgettable J-Term experience. Where are we this March? Midway through a semester where the breaks are few and the online classes many.
This article was supposed to focus on a typical March. However, as we have learned, this March is anything but typical. It’s insane. That doesn’t mean we have to go insane with it.
I’m talking about burnout.
The longer atypical life continues, the harder it becomes to balance work and life. This makes each day more dangerous than the last.
Each day also makes it more imperative for self care. Here are some ideas to help you burn through March rather than burn out:
Breathe in 2-3-4, out 2-3-4. Repeat. All flames need air to survive. Sometimes, as obvious as it seems, we forget to breathe. Before we know it, our flame is out.
Remember, the moment - even this moment, right now, reading this article! - is yours. In 2-3-4, out 2-3-4. Your exam is not now. Worrying about it is taking the exam twice; no one wants to do that. Besides, spring is in the air. It will be gone in a breath. Breathe it in.
Do what you love! We all have a burning passion. Books, music, exercise, eight hours of sleep. Life is short and the moment is now. Find what fuels your fire and do it. Your fire always comes first.
Change is coming. However, it cannot come fast enough. In the meantime, take back control and make the changes YOU are capable of. Mix up your decorations, take a new route to class, eat with your left hand! Change is your best friend in an endless monotony. Reinvigorate your life. Make a change today.
Although Carthage’s mascot may now be the Firebirds, it has never been harder for Carthage students to keep our fire alive. I commend all of you, but no one is invincible. Take care of your inner fire, Carthage. We are flying toward a better tomorrow.
