My name is Sarah Polick ’18 and I am a communications major and a public relations minor Batavia, Illinois graduating early in December! I am a human resources intern for IFS North America. One of my goals going into the internship was to take advantage of every opportunity possible. Each day, I have learned something new and taken advantage of all the resources and employees around me to learn the most about human resources as possible. I would like to continue to do so throughout my remaining time here. I came into the internship not knowing exactly what to expect since it was my first time working in an office. Now I have more of a routine/schedule that I follow daily. I have not had any specific challenges within the internship itself, but my largest challenge has been the commute to the internship. In total, I drive about two and a half hours a day in traffic, so that has been a challenge for me. My days are typically over 10 hours, but I have stayed positive about the commute by recognizing how important it is to have this experience and exposure!
A lot goes on in human resources that may go unnoticed. I have learned all the behind-the-scenes work in the department and how much an HR team at any company must do to manage the workplace culture and environment. I have worked on many projects to keep policies and procedures up to date within the organization. Some specific work I have done has been in harassment, diversity, affirmative action, and recruitment. I have also worked on scheduling all phone screens and on-site interviews with candidates. It is fun to be on the other side of recruitment. I have completed any task or project a manager or supervisor has given to me in a timely manner. I am always helping out where I am needed and completing project after project. Sitting in an office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., five days a week can be very long. I have gotten used to it by staying busy and drinking coffee. There are always surprises. I have worked on an abundance of projects for different people, so you never know what might come your way. The working environment is very positive and everyone has been very welcoming and helpful. My personality fits well with the organization. There are many different personalities in the office, I have found similar personalities work in the same department. Everyone is very diverse and I think that makes for a good working and learning environment.
