WSGC Student Spotlight: Rachel Senft

January 17, 2020

Rachel Senft
Sophomore
University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse
Major: Biochemistry
Minor: Biology

Congratulations to Rachel Senft, this week’s #WSGCStudentSpotlight! Rachel is a two-time recipient of an Undergraduate Scholarship award, as well as the recipient of a Women in Aviation award. She is currently studying biochemistry and biology at the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse.

Rachel is currently a sophomore biochemistry major at the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse with a pre-veterinary track. She is also a member of her school’s protein modeling team. The protein modeling is run through the Crest program, part of Milwaukee School of Engineering’s Center of Biomolecular Modeling. Crest is an acronym that stands for Connecting, Researching, Educators, and Students, their goal is to provide opportunities for undergraduates to engage in meaningful conversations with award-winning researchers.

After earning her undergraduate degree, Rachel wants to do research involving the biochemical residue found on the International Space Station. More specifically, Rachel wants to investigate how this biochemical residue could be turned into fuel. Creating fuel from waste would certainly help in the reduction of waste on the ISS, as well as provide a renewable fuel source in space. Rachel is also interested in pursuing research into creating a fuel cell to store solar and wind electricity. With the price of solar panels and windmills dropping, this project only becomes more beneficial, and the technology could one day be used to refuel spaceships on missions.

Congratulations Rachel, and best of luck to you in your future endeavors!
