Time: 7:30pm - 10:00pm CST January 15
Location: Todd Wehr Center, 128 Rooms
The College Democrats and the College Republicans are co-sponsoring a Better Angels Skills Workshop from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, in the Todd Wehr Center. Participants will learn and practice skills for conducting constructive, non-polarizing conversations across the political divide.
Better Angels is a nationwide, grass-roots citizens’ movement to depolarize the cultural conversation. It takes its name from Lincoln’s first inaugural address, when he called for Americans to listen to ‘the better angels of our nature.’
Cameron Swallow, wife of Carthage president John Swallow, will moderate the workshop. Ms. Swallow is the Wisconsin state co-coordinator for Better Angels and a trained moderator for the workshops. “Better Angels teaches listening for understanding, not for persuasion,” she says. “Their work is not to change anyone’s minds about the issues, but to change our minds about each other.”
The Skills Workshop is free and open to all students — ‘red,’ ‘blue,’ or those not claiming a political affiliation.
