Time: 5:00pm - 7:00pm CDT October 11
Location: Science Center’s Integrated Sciences Pavilion
The Psi Chi Psychology Honors Society and the Psychological Science Department are pleased to present the 6th Annual Martin Gardner Celebration of Mind at Carthage. Students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend the celebration from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, at the Science Center’s Integrated Sciences Pavilion.
Every October, people around the world gather to honor the legacy of magician, mathematician, skeptic, puzzler, Lewis Carroll scholar, and science writer, Martin Gardner. This year’s Celebration of Mind will explore The “Wisdom” of Crowds, using magic, puzzles, and games to delight, instruct, and bring people together in a spirit of fun.
The event will begin with brief presentations on topics related to Martin Gardner’s interests in magic, skepticism, and recreational mathematics. This year’s speakers include:
- Joe Diamond (mind reader) — with a demonstration of spooky action at a distance
- Professor Sara Jensen — presenting paradoxical points about group decision making
- Professor Tony Barnhart — speaking on the weird history of studying group behavior
Following the presentations, attendees are encouraged to interact with hands-on displays featuring illusions, recreational mathematics, magic, puzzles, and more.
The evening will culminate with a CAB event featuring a performance by mind reader Joe Diamond at 8 p.m., in the Campbell Student Union Auditorium!
