Carthage’s Wonder Meets Wisdom Lecture Series features Carthage faculty speaking on a variety of topics. Hosted by the Office of Institutional Advancement, lectures are held in such cities as Milwaukee and Chicago.
The final lecture of the Spring 2014 series will be held on Wednesday, April 30. Profs. Tracy Gartner (environmental science, biology, geography) and Jerald Mast (political science) will give a presentation about “The Politics of Water.”
Freshwater scarcity has been called the global crisis of the 21st century. Effective solutions to the planet’s water problems require better understanding of water resources, and the social and environmental contexts that affect and are affected by them. Mustering the political will needed to allocate time and energy to adequately manage water resources requires more effective relationships between scientists and policymakers and greater awareness of water issues and their contexts among the general public. The liberal arts education is an important, well suited preparation for making sense of the complexities involved and effectively communicating those complexities.
The event will be held at the Illinois Beach Resort, 1 Lake Front Drive, Zion, Ill. The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with a complimentary reception of appetizers, beer, wine, and soda. The presentation begins at 6 p.m. There is no cost to attend, but spots are limited. To register, please call 262-551-2137.
