Joseph Signorelli, managing director at Lime Brokerage and Wedbush Securities in Chicago, will work with one to two teams of Carthage students majoring in finance, economics, mathematics, physics, accounting, or computer science on a modeling and analysis project. Wedbush Inc. and its subsidiaries provide asset management, private and institutional brokerage, investment banking, equity research, and other banking and investment services to individual, institutional, and issuing clients. Lime Brokerage is a subsidiary of Wedbush.

The company has worked with select student teams from other universities in the past including:

  • Master of Financial Engineering (MFE) students at the University of California—Los Angeles
  • Master of Science in Financial Engineering (MSFE) students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
  • The Student International Business Council at the University of Notre Dame

“These programs give students a chance to engage in work similar to what they might encounter as full-time employees in the financial industry,” said Mr. Signorelli. “We love giving students the opportunity to present to our team and hear feedback on the work they produce. We hope it encourages them to further their interests in financial markets.”

The project at Carthage will involve tracking monetary policy preferences against asset class performance for the past 100 years. During the fall semester, students on the team(s) will work on gathering, scrubbing data, and model building. In the spring semester, more emphasis will be placed on running/calibrating the model and analyzing output. The project culminates with a presentation to Wedbush and other financial professionals at the Chicago Board of Trade in May.

Students accepted into the project may receive two credits in spring 2017 and will register for FIN 200T. Preference will be given to students who participated in the fall and showed dedication and promise. A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required, as well as availability from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on Fridays during the spring semester to interact with each other and the Wedbush team.

The first conference call will be Friday, Oct. 7. Students interested in applying to participate in the project should contact Prof. Lau at clau@carthage.edu or Mviroglio@carthage.edu.
