All Stories

Not only does Hedberg Library have a variety of DVDs for checkout, it also has online video resources. Each week, a Carthage student, professor, or staff member will share a list of suggested films. This week’s list is from Prof. Cynthia Allen, chair of the Exercise and Sport Science Department.

“Pride & Prejudice” (BBC 1995 Edition)
This six-part series introduced TV Jane Austin fans to the world of binge-watching long before it entered the lexicon. Our feminist heroine Elizabeth Bennet (Jennifer Ehle) stands up for what she believes in — her right to happiness without marrying an unsuitable suitor to save her family fortune. Her pride and prejudice against the norms ruling her society lead her to friction, and eventually admiration, from a prideful, equally prejudiced (against poor people and women) male suitor, Mr. Darcy (Colin Firth).

“The Searchers” (1956)
John Wayne was the Clint Eastwood, Denzel Washington, and Harrison Ford of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. He played the same character in every movie with minor twists in story lines and supporting characters. His movies are fulfilling because you know at the end of the two hours, justice will be served. In this beautifully shot classic, Ethan (John Wayne) and his adopted nephew spend five years tracking down his niece, who was abducted by a warring Indian tribe

“The Birdcage” (1998)
You heard that Robin Williams died, but you’re not sure what you saw him in. This film is a good place to start. His restraint in portraying the gay owner of a nightclub specializing in drag shows kept the film from veering into farce. He was the orbit around which Nathan Lane’s character spun in all her flaming glory. If you don’t know who Nathan Lane, Diane Weist, or Gene Hackman are, let this be your introduction. I own this DVD, but I still watch through the end every time it comes on TV.
