All Stories

Not only does Hedberg Library have a variety of DVDs for checkout, it also has online video resources. Each week, a Carthage student, professor, or staff member will share a list of suggested films. This week’s list is from Susanne Jones, leadership annual giving officer.

I just learned that with the brisker weather, will come some rain this weekend. I’d first suggest going to a game or the fabulous production of “The Invisible Hand,” but if you find your Sunday with nothing better to do, these are my curl up with a blanket “go to” rainy day movies.

“Holiday”

Growing up watching older movies with my grandmother was always a treat. She would spoil me rotten those weekends I visited with Jiffy Pop and Tang. This was also the time I became fascinated with Katharine Hepburn, a female actress in the ’30’s who could outwit her male counterparts and redefined female roles. In her role in “Holiday” she plays the black sheep member of her family. So, when her sister meets Cary Grant on holiday and suddenly announces they are to be married, we slowly discover that Katharine has more in common with him than her sister. What ensues is witty banter and plenty of comical laughs.

“Chef”

This is one of those movies you discover on Netflix and can’t understand why it wasn’t a hit at the movie theater. It’s storytelling at it’s finest. After being pushed too far by the owner of his restaurant, Jon Favreau embarks on a journey to rediscover his passion for food and reconnects with his young son by sharing his love of feeding the soul through food. Warning: This movie will make you hungry!

“The Breakfast Club”

This is the quintessential movie of my era, but other than the clothing it is quite timeless. If you haven’t seen it, shame on you! Don’t go through another weekend without seeing Judd Nelson with his fist in the air to the soundtrack “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by Simple Minds.
