Carthage welcomes Alan Beaman on Friday, Oct. 13, for a presentation connected to the First Year Read for 2017-2018, Just Mercy, by Bryan Stevenson.

Mr. Beaman’s presentation will be held from 11:40 a.m. to 1:10 p.m. in the A. W. Clausen Center for World Business, Room 107.

In 1993 Jennifer Lockmiller, a student at Illinois State University, was found murdered in her apartment. Several suspects were identified in the case, but the prosecution focused on Alan Beaman, who was Miss Lockmiller’s ex-boyfriend. Even though he was living 140 miles away from Miss Lockmiller at the time, and had an alibi, Mr. Beaman was convicted of the crime. He was given a 50-year sentence that he began serving when he was only 20 years old. He then spent the next 13-and-a-half years in prison before the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University was able to exonerate him.

Mr. Beaman’s 30-minute presentation will be followed by 30 minutes of questions and answers. All are welcome. The event is free.
