Jamie Tyrrell ’17, an Asian Studies major from Andover, Minn., has been selected to receive a prestigious Fulbright Fellowship to South Korea. She will serve as an English Teaching Assistant in an elementary school classroom. This marks a return to the country where Jamie spent six months last year, as a student at Seoul’s Yonsei University. “I am enthralled with Korea’s rich culture, and I found my exposure to entertainment and media was only a small fraction of what it has to offer,” she wrote in her Fulbright application essay. “South Korea has become the place I want to both study and educate others about.”

As an Educational Studies minor, tutor for international students at Carthage, and a language learner herself, Jamie has gained a number of techniques that allow her to engage with students at both the classroom and individual levels. Outside of her school responsibilities, she plans to be active at children’s and senior centers at her placement location to make English language instruction accessible to the wider community. “I am enthusiastic about contributing to the Fulbright mission of international partnership — to connect people of different nationalities and share culture,” she wrote.

Following her Fulbright year, she hopes to pursue a Ph.D. in linguistic anthropology with a geographic concentration on South Korea, with the ultimate aim of starting or contributing to a Korean Studies program at a US institution of higher education to teach more people about the culture, society, and language of Korea.

The Fulbright Fellowship is the premier program of cultural and educational exchange for American students, supported by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Congratulations to Jamie Tyrrell on her Fulbright Fellowship!
