810 students, new president start Carthage journeys together
While welcoming 810 incoming students to the Carthage community, President John R. Swallow pointed out he’ll always be the 811th member of their class.
When he spoke at the New Student Convocation on Sept. 2, President Swallow had just completed his second month in office. He started July 1.
“New students, I share your sense of wonder about this place,” he said at the annual event in Tarble Arena. “I share your curiosity about what will happen here, and about what the future will hold.”
Before entering the arena, President Swallow and the new Carthaginians held a symbolic candle-lighting ceremony in A. F. Siebert Chapel. They jointly chanted the elements of the College’s mission statement: “Seeking Truth, Building Strength, Inspiring Service – Together.”
The newest Carthaginians include 720 freshmen and 90 transfer students. They come from 23 U.S. states and five foreign countries: Canada, China, Japan, Kenya, and Serbia.
As the father of two undergraduate college students, President Swallow assured parents he could relate to their conflicting emotions. He said Carthage is committed to provide mentoring and guidance, as well as the space to “make their own decisions and take personal responsibility for their actions.”
Kenosha mayor John Antaramian, too, shared wisdom he gleaned from being a Carthage parent. Mr. Antaramian described the unexpected career turn his daughter Melinda ’08 took, shelving a lifelong goal of veterinary medicine to teach English in Japan.
“She found her passion and lives her passion, and that’s what you all need to do,” he said.
Student Government president Ellena Ignacio ’18 advised the Class of 2021 to say yes to new opportunities.
“You’ve come to a place with no presumptions or preconceived notions of who you are,” Ellena told the audience. “You will define yourself by the choices you make.”
Even after classes begin Sept. 6, several more days of welcome events are planned. All students – new and returning – can participate in Carthage Kick-off Days.
