On Wednesday, Oct. 4, Introduction to Sculpture students temporarily displayed their large-scale, collaborative sculptures against the backdrop of a clear blue sky and Lake Michigan. Their creations engaged passers-by.

For this sculptural experiment students paired up. Each person made several design sketches. Together, they discussed their design ideas with art instructor, Jojin Van Winkle, and then the student teams each chose a design to build. Using PVC pipe, PVC pipe fittings and pipe cutters the students constructed their large-scale sculptures. Some incorporated paint into their final forms. The focus of this project was two-fold: to experience the challenges and successes of collaboration and to explore how rigid lines (PVC pipe) can create volume and form.

The project outcomes were a variety of sculptures from abstract to representational:

  • an enlarged, to-scale iPhone with musical notes, entitled Addiction
  • a cityscape, entitled Pipe City
  • a Rubber Ducky
  • an Untitled work with large cube shape with red and black shapes floating in it
  • another abstracted form based on an old style camera, entitled The Big Picture
  • a house

If you missed the temporary exhibition, these unique large-scale sculptures are available on the first floor of the H. F. Johnson Center for the Fine Arts, near the art studios.
