Mother Courage and Her Children
All Stories

Carthage Theatre’s production of “Mother Courage and Her Children” is directed by prominent Milwaukee director Mary Macdonald-Kerr. Some Carthaginians may remember her amazing production of “Urinetown” two years ago. This play is receiving a new original score and sound design, created by Josh Schmidt, acclaimed composer of ADD1NG MACH1N3, as well as countless other Broadway, Off-Broadway, and regional credits. “Josh workshopped the music with our students, and was very giving of his time,” states department chair Martin McClendon.  McClendon continues, “He and Mary are a perfect team to work on this new translation of Brecht’s masterpiece. Our students are really excited to work with them both. They know they’ve got something special here.”

Tony Kushner’s new adaptation of “Mother Courage” brings dark humor and great songs to the play. Music faculty member Amy Haines serves as the show’s music director. “It’s a rough-and-tumble, funny, touching, and provocative play that isn’t afraid to ask tough questions about how we treat each other, using war as the backdrop,” said McClendon.

“Mother Courage and her Children” opened on Nov. 3. The show takes place in the Wartberg Theatre, located inside the David. A. Straz Jr. Center for the Natural and Social Sciences. Upcoming showtimes are:

  • 7:30 p.m. - Friday, Nov. 10
  • 7:30 p.m. - Saturday, Nov. 11
