The Business Services Department at Carthage College seeks a Senior Accountant. The Senior Accountant is responsible for all areas relating to financial reporting, including maintenance of accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger preparation, financial reporting, grant reporting, year-end audit preparation, and the support of budget and forecast activities. This position will interact with CFO and Controller and Business Services team members, as well as many customers of the Business Services Department, therefore requiring strong interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Obtains and maintains a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure.
- Works with the Controller to ensure an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end close, including timely completion of year-end audit.
- Ensures the timely reporting of all monthly financial information, including the proper recording of all funds balances (plant, restricted, endowment, deferred gifts, federal grants and loans, and others as required).
- Ensures all monthly, quarterly, and annual bank, investment, and endowment compliance and reporting activities are performed in a timely and accurate manner.
- Collaborates with the other department managers (Financial Aid, Student Accounts, and Advancement) to support overall College financial goals and objectives.
- Ensures reconciliation of assigned balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis.
- Supports budget and forecasting activities as required.
- Supports grant reporting requirements including:
* Analysis of award terms and conditions and specified guidelines, as well as billing and reporting requirements and spending restrictions;
* Coordination of invoice processing including payment follow up, and collaboration with principal investigators and department administrators to ensure accurate and timely processing of financial reports;
* Set-up and ongoing analysis of accounts to facilitate compliance to award and grant reporting, including corresponding cost transfers and corrections;
* Ongoing communication with sponsors regarding required approvals, monitoring of variances to grant budgets;
* Research inquiries from Department Administrators and Principal Investigators regarding financial data, allowable cost, and other sponsors’ restrictions and limitations.
- Monitors and analyzes accounting processes and related work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy. Assists in development and implementation of new procedures and features to enhance the workflow of the department.
- Responds to inquiries from the CFO, Controller, and other College managers regarding financial results and special reporting requests.
- Works with the student accountants to ensure all assigned financial reporting deadlines are met.
- Supports CFO and Controller with special projects and workflow process improvements.
- Performs other job duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, and Licensure
- B.A./B.S. in accounting, CPA preferred.
- Six years of progressive accounting/finance experience, higher education industry experience a plus.
- In-depth understanding of technical US GAAP accounting standards, working knowledge of grant accounting, including OMB Circular A21 and A133; Uniform Grant Management Standards a plus.
- Ability to read and interpret grant contracts to determine risks, appropriate accounting treatment, and other pertinent information, as well as ability to learn the district’s accounting systems utilizing available technology to handle multiple priorities; to meet deadlines; and to resolve problems.
- Experience with large ERP systems, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities, meet assigned deadlines, and to resolve problems encountered.
- Excellent organization and time management skills, as well as strong oral and written communication skills.
