Model UN traveled to Canada for NAMUN conference
All Stories

A group of Model United Nations students, accompanied by professors Jeffrey Roberg and Penny Seymoure, traveled to Toronto, Canada to participate in the 33rd iteration of the North American Model United Nations (NAMUN) Conference. The conference took place February 22-25, 2018 at Victoria College of the University of Toronto. NAMUN featured 421 students from 38 colleges and universities from Canada, Estonia and the United States.

Our students participated in seven different committees tackling a variety of current and historical issues. Debating the spread of misinformation, the legitimacy of the Kurdish people, biotechnology, and the arms trade, our members spent their time negotiating some of the world’s most pressing issues. Some of our Model UN students participated in an historical crisis committee that included an integrated Colombian Conflict that discussed a variety political, economic, military, and social issues. Additionally, other members of our team dealt with a Malayan crisis simulation exploring nationalism versus British colonialism.

Of course, our delegates also had some fun with their topics. Specifically, the “Special Political and Decolonization” committee gave the Kurdish people an observer seat in the United Nations, the Arms Trade Treaty committee unified the Koreas, and the Colombian Crisis legalized cocaine to defeat the drug cartels.
