Dean of the Division of Professional Studies, Jacqueline Easley, contributed a chapter entitled “Engaging Beginning Readers and Writers in Visual Literacy through Picture Books” to the edited volume Teaching Literacy in Urban Schools: Lessons from the Field. (Rowman and Littlefield, 2018).

Professor Easley’s chapter explores how readers interact with the Newberry Award-winning book, “Last Stop on Market Street” (2015), written by Matt de la Pena and illustrated by Christian Robinson. It includes analysis of visual and artistic elements and social/cultural values, as well as research-based methods for engaging beginning readers in social justice literacy activities. The chapter concludes with a list of other books that teachers and students can read for their visual elements to enhance literacy skills in young readers. The edited volume includes research from contributors who are affiliated with universities and colleges across the country.

Congratulations, Prof. Easley!
