The Carthage Music Department presents Giacomo Puccini’s one-act comic opera “Gianni Schicchi” at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 7 and 8 in A. F. Siebert Chapel. The public is invited and there is no admission charge.

The opera is part of a trio of one-act operas which are collectively titled “Il Trittico,” which had its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in 1919. “Gianni Schicchi” is by far the most popular of the three and includes one of the best known of all soprano arias, “O bio babbino caro.”

Carthage’s production transplants the action to New Jersey in the 21st century, with echoes of “The Sopranos” and “Jersey Shore.” The plot concerns how the greedy relatives of the wealthy, recently deceased Buoso Donati conspire to circumvent his last will and testament (which leaves them nothing) by bringing in the quick-witted Gianni Schicchi to help them. He is successful in his efforts, but in ways that the relatives could not have possibly imagined.

Matt Boresi is the stage director, and musical preparation has been supervised by Peg Cleveland and Gregory Berg.
