Welcome to the start of a new academic year! We hope everyone enjoyed their summer and is excited to welcome both our new and returning students to campus.

Staff Council is kicking off our employee spotlight series this year with a feature on Carthage’s human resources information specialist, Julie Morse.

Julie’s new supervisor, Marianne Marshall, had this to say about Julie: “I have not been Julie’s supervisor very long. However, it has been apparent from the first time I met her that she is truly committed to the mission and vision of the Carthage community. Julie cares greatly for each and every employee and for the past few months has done her best to keep the department operational. She is always willing to lend an ear or stop what she is doing to help a colleague. We are very fortunate to have her as part of the staff.”

Julie has been very busy since she started at Carthage just over a year ago and hasn’t had a lot of time to connect with people socially, so we thought the Staff Spotlight would be a great way to learn a bit more about her!

Get to know Julie even more:

What are some things you personally like?

  • “I enjoy helping and watching my three kids learn. I like to read, and I have been collecting records since my high school days. I love music and seeing live shows when I can. I also love the water.”

What don’t you like?

  • “I am not a big fan of crowds. I am not really comfortable being the center of attention. I don’t care for romantic or sad movies.”

Do you have any nicknames?

  • “Panm, Pan or Pand, Human Resources Lady. Just kidding. My grandpa used to call me Jules and it sort of stuck.”

How long have you worked at Carthage?

  • “I have been here for one year this last July.”

What is your favorite TV show, movie or book?

  • “I am a fan of ‘The Walking Dead’; I like watching how they try to keep their humanity despite the times. Movies - ‘The Dark Knight’; if you know me, you know I saw this quite a few times in the theater :). There are so many great books, and despite this being the angst classic, ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ remains a favorite. What an honorable job Holden wanted to have.”

If you could meet anyone, who would it be?

  • “I think Mother Teresa. I am amazed by her selfless service and the amount of patience and compassion she had.”

What is your favorite place on Earth?

  • “Being with my three kids and our dog. If we are by the water, even better. I have twin boys and a daughter.”

What do you like most about working at Carthage?

  • “It has been both an interesting and challenging year. I like the opportunity that can be found at Carthage, and I look forward to some of the changes we have in store!”

What would people never guess you do in  your role?

  • “My role has been all over the place this past year, and I have had the opportunity to do a little bit of everything in HR and then some!”

Before working here, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

  • “I guess appearing in a commercial for a tattoo parlor.”

If you have a bucket list, what is the top item on it?

  • “I have been so busy lately with work and my kids’ activities, I haven’t thought about this. I guess a long standing one would be to visit Jim Morrison’s grave in Paris.”

Is there anything else you think people should know about you?

  • “I strive to do the right thing. I love God. I don’t always get it right, but I try again the next day. I thought of becoming a nun in high school, but I am also a secret rocker who sold her flute to buy a guitar so she could play like Jimmy Page. I may not have achieved that goal…Anyhow, I truly want to help others. I appreciate everyone’s patience this past year and look forward to the future.”

Thank you, Julie, for all you do for Carthage!
