The design by Haley Schrock ’19, a double major in studio art and Great Ideas, has been selected for the new Beastie public art piece, which will serve as the mascot for the Center for Children’s Literature in Hedberg Library.

The selection committee was especially drawn to the interactive nature of Haley’s design. Her design features titles and images from classic children’s books, including Haley’s favorite book of all time, “The Little Prince.” The inspiration for Haley’s artwork includes “When a child yells ‘Hey I’ve Read that book,’” as well as the nostalgia associated with unfinished coloring books.

Haley will graduate in May, and after graduation, she is planning a wedding and a move to Athens, Georgia, where she plans to work with galleries in the Atlanta area.

The beastie will be painted by Hailey and other students this spring. All are invited to stop by Hedberg Library and view the work in progress. The completed project will be moved to the home of the Center for Children’s Literature in the lower level of Hedberg Library in May for an unveiling, during which Beastie artist Dennis Pearson, design winner Haley Schrock, and others contributing to the project will be recognized.

The beastie project for the Center for Children’s Literature was made possible by a generous gift from the estate of Louis O. Peters Jr.
