High school students from Racine Unified School District who are interested in becoming teachers will attend Carthage’s Educators Rising event from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday, March 28.

After opening remarks, prospective students interested in becoming elementary or secondary teachers will tour campus and attend breakout sessions featuring faculty and students from Carthage’s Urban Teacher Preparation Program.

“Across the country, we are seeing teacher shortages. Carthage College is leading the way to expose high school students to the benefits and rewards of the teaching profession,” said Michele Hancock, professor of the practice in education. “By providing opportunities for high school students to engage with college-level students who have declared and made a commitment to teaching in urban areas, we are planting the seeds that college is possible for students from underserved communities. We are also communicating that becoming a teacher is an opportunity to return to your community and make a difference.”

Carthage’s education program prepares students to teach in classrooms as undergraduates. The program offers multiple opportunities to interact with K-12 grade students during course of study.
