The English Department is offering scholarships for students to attend The Stratford Shakespeare Festival Sept. 25-28, 2014. English majors and minors can win up to $450 and there are four $100 scholarships available to any student.

Each fall, Carthage takes a weekend trip to Stratford, Ontario, Canada, to see plays at the world-class Stratford Shakespeare Festival. Any Carthage student interested in literature and drama should consider this unforgettable trip an indispensable part of their education.

The plays this year include King Lear, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Beaux Stratagem, Man of La Mancha, Crazy for You, Hay Fever and Alice Through the Looking Glass.

Winner(s) will receive cash toward payment of expenses for the Stratford Festival trip, including bus fare, hotel room, and theatre tickets.

RULES OF COMPETITION

To participate in the competition, submit an essay of at least 500 words on a passage, character or play of Shakespeare’s, or a review of a performance of a play.

Essay should be word-processed and double-spaced. Do not put your name on the essay.

Paper-clip a separate sheet to the essay, with the information “Stratford competition essay”, your name, phone number, and email.

Essays are due on Monday, March 31, 2014.
