In Fall 2019, Professor Darwin Tsen will offer his second iteration of CHN/JPN 3080: Chinese and Japanese Literature and Culture class. Titled Metropolitan Mediations, the course will focus on how the Chinese and Japanese megacity shapes our literary, cinematic, and interactive understandings of our selves, in relation to collectives of other individuals and the urban environment. Through engaging fiction, films, graphic novels, and video games, we will critically analyze, compare, and contrast the various ways in which “culture” affects the urban and vice versa.

Course selections include, but are not limited to Banana Yoshimoto, Jia Zhangke, Haruki Murakami, Sheng Keyi, Natsuo Kirino, Liu Zhenyun, Yasunari Kawabata, Ming-yi Wu, Ozu Yasujiro, Atlus, Team Ninja, and SEGA. The class fulfills humanities credits.

If you are interested in the class but are not sure you meet the prerequisites, please email Prof. Tsen at dtsen@carthage.edu
