Carthage student in Namibia
All Stories

A land of contrast and uncompromising beauty, Namibia is regarded as one of the top adventure travel destinations in not only Africa, but also the entire world! It is the only country in the world with increasing free-roaming lion and black rhino populations.

Namibian culture is truly unique. Influenced by colonization and now reborn from the shadows of Apartheid in 1990, what has emerged is a true sense of unity in diversity, the coming together of at least 11 major ethnic groups, each celebrating their past while working together toward the future. You will notice this in dress, language, art, music, sport, food, and religion.

We will have direct interaction with at least four of these distinct cultures: San/Bushmen, Ovambo, Himba, and Damara. We will also spend two days in Etosha National Park, one of Southern Africa’s greatest wildlife sanctuaries.

This J-Term experience is designed for the adventurous student who doesn’t mind pitching in to help, conversing with nature, and the challenges of bush camping, and is limited to 12 participants. If you are interested in learning more, please complete this questionnaire/application. You may contact Professor Peter Dennee at pdennee@carthage.edu for more information and a flyer containing the entire itinerary.

Grants of up to $2,000 are available to qualifying students participating in J-Term experiences in Africa. If you are interested in the Namibia J-Term short-term study tour, I encourage you to also apply for a grant. The Wiggan-Kenniebrew grants are available to students who meet the qualifying criteria and complete an essay demonstrating evidence of the student’s commitment to an inclusive and expansive world. In addition to meeting the qualifying criteria and completing the essay, students must also meet financial need requirements as determined by the financial aid office and provide a faculty/staff recommendation. Applications are due by Saturday, Aug. 31.
