Active Minds seeks SORO speakers

April 07, 2014

The Carthage chapter of Active Minds is still looking for Carthage students and faculty to share their stories about challenges they faced and how they overcame them or learned to cope.

Active Minds is a national organization that aims to educate students about the prevalence of mental illness among college students. The Carthage chapter started a speaker series titled Speak Out Reach Out, or SORO.

SORO allows students/faculty to present to their peers for 30-45 minutes about a struggle they faced in life, always ending on a positive note about how they overcame the challenge or learned to cope. The speaker series was recognized with a national award by the Active Minds organization.

Past presentations have been on:

  • Living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Surviving Suicide
  • Overcoming Self-Blame
  • Leaving Anxiety out of Uncertainty
  • Coping with Loss
