What happens when a contemporary poet encounters an ancient one? Richard Meier, writer in residence, will discuss Writing at the Same Time Of Sappho at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, in Niemann Media Theater.

Please come — and please invite your students — to the inaugural Hannibal Lecture of 2019-20, the year of the woman at Carthage. Refreshments will be provided.

For the past weeks, writer-in-residence Rick Meier has been writing in/with/from/to Sappho, exploring how it is to be at the time in lyric…

“bitter
and know this
whatever you
I shall love
for
of weapons”
[Sappho, fragment 177]

backward
and knitted to
where yet
is summoning later
fragments
of what
[Meier]
