Devotional Film Series continues Friday with ‘Into Great Silence’

The Religion Department and Communication and Digital Media Department continue in presenting a film series exploring the landscape of devotional cinema, and examining concepts of faith and culture worldwide. The films chosen for this series have been drawn from major world religions in an attempt to understand our individual and shared human experiences.

The series continues this fall with Philip Groning’s “Into Great Silence,” a gentle and intimate portrayal of the daily lives of Carthusian monks at a monastery in the French Alps. Groning lived with the monks and shared their lives during his six months of filmmaking. The film was shot using only natural light and has no additional voiceover, both of which enhance the work’s meditative quality.

The film will be shown at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1 in the Niemann Media Theater in Hedberg Library.
