Dairyland Classic Mock Trial Invitational Tournament

Carthage and UW-Milwaukee jointly hosted the Dairyland Classic Mock Trial Invitational Tournament at the Kenosha County Courthouse Oct. 26-27. The Dairyland Classic is the only invitational tournament held in Wisconsin. A total of 22 teams from 14 colleges and universities participated from Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, and Iowa. Carthage had two teams in the tournament.  

Carthage A took fourth place with a record of 6-2. Carthage A split ballots with the tournament champion, Wheaton B, who finished at 7-1. The University of Illinois-Chicago and Wheaton A finished in second and third place respectively. Both teams had records of 6.5-1.5. Carthage A team members also took home several individual awards. Micah Pahl ’21 won an Outstanding Attorney Award with a perfect score of 20, while Jon Allen ’22 and Braden Kundert ’21 won Outstanding Witness Awards.  

Judging was provided by the Kenosha, Milwaukee, and Racine County Circuit Courts and their respective Bar Associations. Professors Cassie Lau, Alex Lau, and Colleen O’Brien, as well as Michael O’Brien, also judged various rounds.  

Kenosha County Circuit Court Judge Mary Wagner was instrumental in coordinating the venue at the Kenosha County Courthouse and securing the courtrooms of each of the Kenosha judges and court commissioners. Plans are in place to host the Second Annual Dairyland Classic in October 2020. 

Carthage next competes at Bloomington, Illinois in the Illinois State University Invitational the weekend of November 8-10.

The team is coached by Professor Michael Phegley, (MGT/MKT) with the assistance of Kenosha County Court Commissioner Loren Keating and Attorney Margaret Johnson. Maham Ali ’19 and Joshua Kundert ’19 are graduate assistant coaches of this year’s teams. Professor Helene DeGross (CDM) is also instrumental in the team’s development and success each season. Additionally, Professor Art Cyr and the A. W. Clausen Center for World Business continues to provide support at each tournament and throughout the season.
