Prof. Maribel Morales and alumna Kelly Bauer ’08 reconnected at the North Central Council of Latin Americanists conference Oct. 24-26, 2019.The North Central Council of Latin Americanists conference took place Oct. 24-26 at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, and the theme was “Celebrating the Study of Latin America: Culture, History, Language, and More.” Professor Maribel Morales presented on her research about gender in Peru with a paper titled “Teaching Gender in Peru: Women Empowerment in Tourism and Education.”

At the conference, Prof. Morales had the pleasure of reconnecting with Carthage alumna Kelly Bauer ’08, who was also presenting at the conference. Her talk was titled “Rhetorical Justifications of Immigration Regularization Programs in Chile” and she also presented with three of her students on a collaboration project for which they earned an award at the conference: “Discussing Migration Across the U.S.-Mexico Border in Nebraska.”

Ms. Bauer graduated from Carthage in 2008 with Spanish, history, and political science degrees. She completed her doctorate at George Washington University, and is an assistant professor at Nebraska Wesleyan University, working on state identity policy in South America. Her book, “Mapuche Territory and Chilean Land,” is under contract with the University of Pittsburgh Press.
