McDonough, president and CEO of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Craig Leipold, owner of the Minnesota Wild, to campus for a discussion about the business of sports and changes on the horizon.

Greg Barron, assistant professor of management and marketing at Carthage, moderated the discussion, which focused on the challenges and opportunities facing their organizations, and how professional sports can foster culture and create community.

During the discussion, the hockey executives — who are both parents of Carthage graduates — discussed life on and off the ice, how they manage stress, and the important role that their fans play. They also offered advice for students interested in a career in professional sports.

“Pursue what stirs your blood,” McDonough said. “I would encourage everyone to give themselves a period of time to follow their dreams. That big dream might come true.”

Prof. Greg Barron moderated a discussion on the business of professional sports with John F. McDo... The event was the first installment of a new series, “Spotlight on Sports” that Carthage is hosting over the next several months.

On Feb. 18, Milwaukee Bucks President Peter Feigin will be the featured speaker in the second installment of the series.

Details for the remaining two events are still being worked out but will include Daniel Diaz, Director of World Cup, Olympic, & Cross-Platform Partnerships at NBCUniversal Media, LLC in March and a representative from an E-sports organization in April.

The “Spotlight on Sports” speaker series is free and open to the public.
