In Fall 2018, Carthage embarked on a project to create a Campus Master Plan — an approved framework for the future development and adaptive reuse of campus facilities.

After 14 months, more than 60 stakeholder meetings, and multiple open forums with faculty and staff, a final plan has been developed and approved by the Carthage Board of Trustees.

Carthage partnered with the architecture and planning firm Hanbury on the project. Established in 1979, Hanbury has worked with such institutions as Eastern Kentucky University, Washington State University, College of Charleston, International School of Amsterdam, and University of Kansas.

The Campus Master Plan process was centered in the following guiding statements:

  • To build on the unique sense of place and culture of Carthage.
  • To align the future growth of the campus with the College’s strategic vision for the future.
  • To enhance the student experience, both educational and co-curricular.
  • To reinforce Carthage’s commitment to sustainability.
  • To strengthen connections with the city of Kenosha and the broader region.

The plan considers the highest and best use of resources with a long-range view of environmental impact. At the same time, it emphasizes the importance of land use and building placement, as well as the natural environment, the structure of connected outdoor spaces, and integrated systems such as the circulation network and utility infrastructure.

Members of the Project Executive Committee — President John Swallow, Abigail Hanna, William Hoare, David Timmerman, and Elizabeth Young — are deeply appreciative of all who participated in the discovery and evaluation processes of this effort.
