All Stories

Last month, the Library and Information Services released the “Outwitting Internet Phishers” cybersecurity training module to faculty, staff, and student workers. This was done to meet new Department of Education training requirements and to help increase awareness as it relates to cybersecurity threats. As previously mentioned, a second phase of this training will include an internal phishing campaign.

During the month of December, LIS will send out a phishing email to all faculty, staff, and student workers. This email may contain links and/or attachments, much like real phishing emails, but they will be harmless. Instead, any links clicked (or attachments opened) will provide summarized metrics to help us tailor future cybersecurity training offerings.

Other phishing resources

All members of the Carthage community have access to the following phishing-related resources to assist in detection and reporting of potential phishing campaigns:

Website “Known and Reported Threats”
LIS maintains a list of recent phishing emails on the LIS Website. LIS updates this page as they are made aware of phishing messages circulating around campus. Legitimate emails that seem suspicious can also be found on this page; they will be marked with a green checkmark.

Report to Google
Users also have the ability to report messages as phishing attempts or spam directly within Google. After opening a message, next to the “reply” button is the “more” button. Click this and choose either “report spam” or “report phishing.” Both of these options alert LIS and, more importantly, makes Google’s abuse team to take action.
