As students and faculty wrap up J-Term and gear up for the spring 2020 semester, we want to share some important health-related information regarding the recent outbreak of coronavirus.

To this point, no cases of the coronavirus have been identified in the Carthage community. If you experience symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing within five days after returning from travel in China or Hong Kong or exposed to someone who has, you should visit the Health and Counseling Center or a local walk-in clinic as soon as possible for preliminary testing. A nurse will be available at the Carthage facility from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays through Thursday, Jan. 30, and resuming Wednesday, Feb. 5 (with additional afternoon hours from 2 to 4 p.m.).

Outside of those hours, it is advised you to go to an urgent care facility or emergency room, depending on the severity of your symptoms. The Health and Counseling Center’s website has a list of providers in the area.

The Health and Counseling Center is located in the N. E. Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center, between the dance studio and fitness center. Feel free to contact the staff at 262-551-5710 with any questions.

Because these symptoms can also be attributed to the common cold, they do not automatically indicate the presence of the coronavirus. However, as a precautionary measure, it is very important to seek care promptly if you experience them and have traveled to those countries. No action is needed if you remain symptom-free more than five days after returning to the United States.

To prevent the spread of coronavirus, as with other illnesses, health officials emphasize hand-washing and covering one’s nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing. Keeping your residence clean and sanitary is also important in prevention.
