February Art Exhibition: ‘Well Heeled’

“Well Heeled”Don’t miss the opening reception for the winter art exhibition, “Well Heeled,” from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, in the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art. The gallery will be open until Friday, March 6. The second program, “Shoe & Tell,” will begin at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb.11, location is to be determined.

“Well Heeled” is centered around the lighthearted idea of the shoe as a foundation of issues pertaining to class, gender, fashion, sport, and more. Many transcontinental artists will have their work featured in the gallery. “Shoe & Tell” is the second program that will go beyond the “Well Heeled” exhibit and the walls of the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art. Dana Bassett, the curator behind it all, will hold an informal panel conversation with featured artist, Ashley Teamer, and sneaker expert, Kevin Banks, in which they will discuss the intersection between athletics, art, and commerce. Attendees will also be encouraged to show off their own favorite footwear from their personal collections during the panel. Artists featured in this exhibition are: Manal Kara, Angel Garcia, Gabrielle Ledet, Yvette Mayorga, Ashley Teamer, Selina Trepp, Caleb Yono, and Hope Esser.

The curator of the gallery, Dana Bassett, is a chicago-based writer and the current executive producer of the Bad @ Sports art podcast. She has been the director of many organizations such as The Artists’ Cooperative Residency and Exhibitions Project (ACRE), and Borscht Film Festival. As a writer, she has been published in outlets such as “The Smudge,” “Hyperallergic,” “The Miami Rail,” and “The Seen.” Ms. Bassett also worked with Red Bull, Lumpen Radio, and Common Field.

“Well Heeled” is free and open to the public. The gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday evenings, and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
