Eileen Rivers As part of the activities related to Carthage’s new play about female veterans, “Fighting for Home,” Carthage is bringing award-winning author Eileen Rivers to campus from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, in the Wartburg Theatre lobby to talk about her new book “Beyond the Call,” which chronicles the stories of three women who fought shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts and worked with Afghan women to restore their lives and push back the Taliban.

Ms. Rivers will speak about her book and offer signed copies for purchase. The event is free and open to the public.

?Beyond the Call? Ms. Rivers has been a journalist for more than 15 years and has written for the Washington Post and USA Today. She is currently a digital content editor for USA Today’s editorial page and a member of their editorial board. She recently won an Emmy for her work on an in-depth multi-part series on prisons and recidivism for USA Today, and is founder of the paper’s microsite “Policing the USA,” which tracks what’s happening with police and the criminal justice system across the country.  Her visit is made possible through support from the Equity and Inclusion Certificate Program.

The event is followed at 7:30 p.m. by Carthage Theatre’s production of “Fighting For Home,” a new play by Professor Martin McClendon with assistance from Professor Rebecca Hornung. Using interviews Prof. McClendon and Prof. Hornung conducted with nine female veterans, Prof. McClendon created a play highlighting the struggles and victories of women within the U.S. Military in the last 30 years. Further performances are scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23 and 7:30 p.m. February 27, 28, and 29.
