The flu season is upon us, and health officials nationwide are predicting that this may be one of the worst flu seasons in years. The Health and Counseling Center would like to remind all Carthage students, faculty, and staff of some important prevention tips to help you stay healthy.

Good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu.

Here are other tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth, which can spread germs.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
  • Routinely clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces in your residence and workspace. Remember to clean doorknobs, keyboards, and phones.
  • Practice other good health habits: Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

You may also notice more people wearing medical masks. Due to the severity of the flu and recent concerns about coronavirus, medical personnel may be wearing medical masks while treating patients. Patients exhibiting flu-like symptoms are asked to wear a mask as well, and many other people are choosing to wear masks due to suppressed immune systems or for other reasons.

The Carthage Health and Counseling Center is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The center is located in the N. E. Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center between the dance studio and fitness center. Visit www.carthage.edu/health-counseling for more information about the center’s services.

Stay warm and healthy!
