Jennifer Stumme ?20 Growing up in the rural Midwest, Jennifer Stumme ’20 gained an appreciation for small-town life and a tight-knit community. Now selected for a prestigious English Teaching Assistantship in Indonesia through the Fulbright Program, Jennifer hopes to immerse herself in a small community in a different country. She’s ready to share U.S. culture and learn about the rhythms of everyday life in Indonesia.

history and communication major from Tripoli, Iowa, Jennifer has long nurtured an interest in teaching and history, both on campus and at local museums. She is a tutor and fellow for the History Department, worked as a museum assistant at the Pabst Mansion in Milwaukee, and completed an internship as an archival assistant at the Kenosha History Center. She also served as a committee member and research assistant for the 150 Years of Carthage Women celebration this year.

Jennifer has pursued an interest in international study through a semester in Athens, Greece, and a J-Term course in India with Professor James Lochtefeld. Drawn to serve in this program of educational exchange, Jennifer is excited to teach English and introduce her students to U.S. culture. “I want my students to engage with words and ideas that they may never have encountered before,” she wrote in her application essay. “Together we can explore new perspectives on language and the world itself.”

Upon returning to the U.S., Jennifer intends to pursue a career in the museum world, innovating ways that museum exhibits communicate with patrons in the context of their culture. Congratulations to Jennifer Stumme on her Fulbright placement!

Established in 1946, the Fulbright Program aims to increase mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills. The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, and fellowships are available to American students wishing to spend a year or more abroad after college to teach, conduct scholarly research, or engage in creative projects. During this present uncertain time, many international programs have been suspended. However, we can expect that they will resume in the future; therefore, Carthage students interested in the Fulbright opportunity should contact Professor Dan Choffnes, Fulbright Program Adviser.
