Jojin Van Winkle At the College Art Association’s 108th Annual Conference in February 2020, Professor Jojin Van Winkle presented a workshop titled “Recharge Your Practice: Researching and Applying for International and National Artist Residencies.” The CAA Annual Conference brings together over 4,500 art historians, artists, designers, and visual arts professionals in all stages of their careers. This year’s conference was held in downtown Chicago.

Artist residencies allow for extended time to devote to artistic practice. In her workshop, Prof. Van Winkle gave an overview of residencies, introducing different models (thematically focused, research, working on short or long-term projects, public presentation, retreat, production, socially focused, etc). Workshop participants learned practical tips for researching residency programs, identifying funding avenues and preparing applications. Prof. Van Winkle shared her own experiences of participating in a range of international and national residences since 2006, including programs located in Finland, Greece, and around the United States (Oregon, Illinois, Georgia, Ohio, South Carolina, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and other locations).

This presentation was supported by faculty conference travel funds from the Office of the Provost and workshop funding from CAA.

Prof. Jojin Van Winkle is a visual artist, filmmaker, and assistant professor of art at Carthage — teaching foundations and new media. Her research centers around the practice of listening. She exhibited large-scale installation art before working in video/film, photography, and sound.
