Mae Van Beest ’21 develops film in Darkroom Photography.Carthage recently launched the new Photography and Film and New Media Program, a cross-departmental program through the Art Department and Communication and Digital Media Department, offering two new minors: a photography minor and a film and new media minor

This new program gives students opportunities to make still and moving images, expanding storytelling to join the demand for global conversations. Students will engage in technical and creative skills necessary to design, develop, and produce unique visual experiences and new artworks.

Within these 24-credit minors, students may choose to pursue coursework that emphasizes the discipline of photography (darkroom or digital or both), the discipline of film (film production and screenwriting), the discipline of new media (video art, sound art, light, computational and interactive art, and other new media and time-based forms), or a combination of film and new media classes. The film and new media minor also has supplementary classes in computer science.

These official new minors were created by faculty in response to a growing demand of students doing custom-designed minors in photography and film. Recently, new courses emphasizing the study of digital photography, sound art, alternative photographic processes, video art, stop motion animation, and new media studies have been developed by faculty.

These new minors will allow students to delve deeper into lens-based art production, work with established practices and processes of visual storytelling, and explore expanding digital technology.

“Photography opens the door for so many students to make beautiful images,” says Professor Laura Huaracha, a member of the faculty team that developed the photography minor. “This minor is an exciting opportunity for students to pursue this needed skill set.”
