This week, Carthage distributed approximately $54,000 in aid to students with pressing financial needs as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. These funds are a combination of philanthropic and government dollars allocated to the Student Emergency Assistance Fund. Since launching the fund in late March, the College has raised over $11,000 and approximately $74,000 has been allocated from the CARES Act.

Giving Day 2020 This Tuesday, May 5, we will once again be asking our community to come together in support of the Student Emergency Assistance Fund in our rescheduled Giving Day. This year, Giving Day will coincide with #GivingTuesdayNow — a global day of giving in response to the unprecedented needs caused by COVID-19. We hope this effort will help close the gap between the growing needs of our students and the support raised.

Over 261 students have applied for emergency assistance to help pay for essential household expenses, such as rent and utilities, unforeseen travel and storage costs, and technology for online instruction. The average amount of aid requested per student is $1,600.

A team of eight Carthage faculty and staff, led by Professor Michele Hancock, was quickly assembled to assist in the process of contacting students and reviewing applications. “During these challenging and uncertain times, we demonstrate the Carthage mission by placing our students at the center of our thoughts and actions,” says Prof. Hancock. “This is a moment in time when we embrace our students by providing monetary support but most importantly by reaching out to say, we care about you, and we are willing to invest in your well-being by providing a listening ear and conversation — the personal touch!”

With many students out of work, the need for emergency funds continues to grow. Families have also been affected through a reduction in hours, furloughs, and layoffs. Carthage will continue to provide support to our students and their families during these challenging times.

To request emergency funds, students should fill out the application for the COVID-19 Emergency Funds.
