Geospatial science student team create arboretum app to showcase notable trees on campus
Four students Kathleen Cochran ’21, Adam Curtis ’20, Julia Karpinski ’21, and Tristan Ottenfeld ’20 from GEO4600: Applied GIS Projects class have created and published their app named “Alice Moody Chapin Arboretum Tour” to both the Android Play Store and the Apple App Store.
The app showcases about ten notable trees and a few other naturally or environmentally significant features of interest on our beautiful arboretum style campus through an intuitive design and easy to navigate interface. This geo-enabled mobile app incorporates geographical coordinates collected using high-precision GPS from GEO2610 Advanced GIS class, tree information from GEO3400 Forest Ecology class, tree stories, and most photos from long-time Professor Kurt Piepenburg into one informative and interactive self-guided tour.
The team has just shared their work at the Celebration of Scholars event. This applied project was sponsored by the 150 Years of Carthage Women committee. The Geospatial Science Department would like to invite students and their families who will pick up belongings for the summer or graduation to try out the app while enjoying a relaxing stroll on campus.
