Lamar Simpson ’20, a Marketing major, who graduated in December, was named the 2019-2020 AUS Distinguished Adult Learner.

The Distinguished Adult Learner Award is given to a graduating senior in the 7-week or part-time semester program with a 3.6 cumulative GPA or above. The student must have earned at least 40 graded credits at Carthage, as well as at least 75 percent of their Carthage credits through the Adult Undergraduate Studies program.

Lamar began taking classes with AUS in Spring 2018. While he was a student at Carthage, he worked full-time as an aluminum die caster, which entailed working all day in extreme temperatures, and attended courses in the evening.

David Nield, one of Lamar’s faculty references said of him, “Lamar Simpson is a bright, hard working, articulate student and was recently in my Principles of Management class. He earned the only full A in that class. It’s essential to know this was not due to him simply relying on his native skills. He added to his native abilities with very hard work every week. He was very conscientious, contributed often, and always participated from a perspective of humbleness.”

During Lamar’s last semester at Carthage, he landed a professional job as an inside sales rep for a metal manufacturer. In the future, he hopes to pursue his Master’s in Business and to run his own business, which is currently in the works. Lamar is married and has a 5-year-old daughter and 3-year-old twin daughters.
