Prof. Jim Ripley publishes 1918 pandemic article
WASBE World, the quarterly magazine of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, published Professor Jim Ripley’s article related to the 1918 H1N1 flu pandemic in their March 2020 issue.
Titled “Howard Hanson — Band Master,” the article explores how the musical activity at the College of the Pacific in San Jose was influenced by the pandemic and close of the first World War. Events of the time led to the composition of Hanson’s “Triumphal Ode,” the first symphonic-type piece for band by an American composer.
