Registration is now open for a virtual Conference on Interfaith Understanding hosted by Luther College (Iowa) for the Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities (NECU). The conference will be held in two 90-minute sessions, one on Wednesday, July 15 and the other on Thursday, July 16. This is open to all members of the Carthage community.

NECU Interfaith Understanding Conference 

1-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 15

“Religiously Fluid in the 21st Century: Higher Education and the Case for Interreligious Education” — Professor Najeeba Syeed, Chicago Theological Seminary. 

  • Prof. Syeed will engage the concept of religious fluidity with an eye towards how this is changing the landscape of spiritual care, interfaith relations, and the study of religion on university campuses.
  • Panel discussion including Professor Gereon Kopf, Luther College and Fardossa Hassan, Muslim Student Program Associate at Augsburg University.
  • Q&A with presenter and panelists moderated by Chaplain Siri Erickson, Gustavus Adolphus College, and Pastor Anne Edison-Albright, Luther College.

1-2:30 p.m. Thursday, July 16

A Declaration of Inter-Religious Commitment: A policy statement of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America” — Kathryn Lohre, Assistant to the Presiding Bishop, Ecumenical and Inter-Religious Relations & Theological Discernment. 

  • Kathryn Lohre will present an overview of the “Declaration,” discuss its origins, and its relevance to NECU institutions.   
  • Panel discussion including Professor Wanda Deifelt, Luther College; Ashalul Aden (’20), Luther College; and Professor Jacqueline Bussie, Concordia College (Moorhead, MN).
  • Q&A with presenter and panelists moderated by Pastor Anne Edison-Albright, Luther College and Vicar Amalia Vagts, Luther College.
