Professor Nora Nickels Professor Nora NickelsIn the COVID-19 era, educators have had to adapt their courses for virtual learning. However, each of the small choices that professors make during this process can have unintended consequences. For example, does learning (or student perceptions of learning) change if the professor’s face is not visible during a virtual lecture? Professor Nora Nickels from the Psychological Science Department has been awarded a grant from the Association for Psychological Science (APS) to support her research on this question and others related to virtual pedagogy.

The financial award is part of a special initiative from the APS to support research on best practices for teaching psychological science online. Prof. Nickels brings an innovative approach to the scholarship of teaching and learning thanks to her background in behavioral endocrinology and the physiological correlates of stress. The approaches educators adopt can be enhanced or diminished if they elicit certain forms of stress in student populations. Prof. Nickels hopes that understanding the myriad relationships between stress and learning can inform pedagogy and improve educational outcomes in the future.
